CAMBRIA COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — Seventh grade students at Cambria Heights gathered at the high school Thursday to learn about agriculture with the planting of sweet corn.
Yahner Brothers Farms, which owns the field, planted the corn and taught the kids about all things agriculture, science and business.
Marty Yahner, the Cambria County Farm Bureau President and co-owner of Yahner Brothers Farms, says only 1.5 percent of the nation is involved in the production of agriculture.
He says it's important for kids to understand where their food comes from.
"Agriculture is the #1 industry in Cambria County and Pennsylvania: not in the number of jobs, but the number of economic activities. And it's important for kids to know, and adults, where their food comes from, because almost everybody is 3, maybe 4, generations removed from a farm. We all had grandparents and great-grandparents who were farmers, but not so much anymore. So, it's important for kids to know where their food comes from."
The kids will harvest the sweet corn when they return to school in the fall.
