Meet the first Black female pit crew member for Nascar

ABC7 continues to celebrate Black History Month with yet another story of living black history. Brehanna Daniels broke a major barrier back in 2017. That’s when the Norfolk State University grad became the first black female pit crew member for NASCAR.

Daniels, who was a basketball player at Norfolk State, says she was at lunch one day when she got a random heads-up from a friend that NASCAR was holding tryouts at the school.

Daniels was confused at first, but after giving it thought, she decided to give it a go. After shining at those tryouts, Daniels was one of ten selected from around the country to join NASCAR's Drive for Diversity program.

“I’m changing the narrative,” Daniels says.

“I’m adding that black girl magic, you know what I’m saying," Daniels said.

I’m getting more of us to join our sport. And it’s so awesome seeing people on different social media accounts like Instagram and Twitter. People are saying now I have a reason to watch NASCAR. and you that's what I love to see.

Daniels was honored at the NASCAR Drive for Diversity Awards in October 2020 where she received the Crew Member Award.
