Police shooting near Ligonier leads to man's death; investigation underway

Authorities have identified the person shot and killed by police Sunday afternoon in Ligonier Township.

Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees says an autopsy revealed 59-year-old Robbie Saunders died of blood loss from a single gunshot wound to the chest.

He died just before 5 p.m. in the operating room of Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center.

It's unclear what the initial call was for, but the Westmoreland County District Attorney's office says Ligonier Valley police officers were called to a home on Gravel Hill Road around 3:50 p.m., which is when the officer-involved shooting happened.

The DA's office says no officers were injured.

The incident is still under investigation.

A man was shot and killed by police near Ligonier Sunday afternoon, according to multiple agencies.

The Westmoreland County District Attorney’s office posted on social media that the officer-involved shooting happened on Gravel Hill Road in Ligonier Township, near Route 711. It said the road will be closed as county detectives and State Police investigate.

District Attorney Nicole Ziccarelli said in the release, Ligonier Valley Police officers responded to a house at that location at 3:50 p.m., which led to the officer involved shooting.

She said no officers were injured, and the identity of the person shot is not being released at this time

Cambria County Coroner Jeff Lees told 6 News that the man was brought to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center where Lees said he died around 5 p.m.
