Recent court ruling will likely spawn more appeals, delays in Centre County casino dispute

More than six months ago, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board gave the "green light" for plans to move ahead with a new casino in Centre County.

But since then, those plans are still tied in a series of court suits, and it doesn’t appear that there will be a quick resolution to the dispute.

The proposed casino, located at the former Macy’s store site in the Nittany Mall, remains mired in a three-ring legal circus.

SC Gaming won license approval back in January and the company is being challenged by the Stadium Casino Group, who lost out to SC Gaming in the 2020 license bidding process, and the gaming commission itself.

In Pennsylvania commonwealth court, in their latest filing in May, the Stadium Casino Group again claimed that they believe SC Gaming, headed by former Penn State trustee Ira Lubert, violated financing rules tied to license bidding process, which Lubert denies.

The Stadium Group is also challenging the Gaming Control Board in court over jurisdiction issues.

They allege a counterclaim filed by the board threatens to shut down Stadium's other gambling sites in Pennsylvania.

Last week, the commonwealth court issued a series of rulings that essentially denies some portions of various casino related legal suits, while allowing other parts of the lawsuits to move forward.

The ruling also sets up more court hearings on the dispute this fall, which could lead to more appeals in court and more delays for the Nittany Mall casino.
